We all had an excellent 6 days in New York City.
It felt good to meet the familiar and loving faces of family.
We were also pleased to get a chance to spend an evening with Maria, Holtan Sophia and Isabel.
The week for the most part was made up of visiting famous New York sites and an incredible amount of art appreciation.
On our arrival to New York we made our way directly to get a look at Times Square in the full radiance of a Saturday night. Ruben was awestruck by the magnitude of the brilliantly lit signs.
We visited the Empire State Building and Mia listened intently to the audio guide and we all enjoyed the spectacular view on a glorious sunny day.
We happened upon a Polish Day Parade and the kids were able to see the ethnic diversity within the city and how this is celebrated. Mia especially loved the traditional Polish outfits of the women in the Parade.
We were excited to see Grand Central Station being that “it is Grand and its central” (our favorite quote from Madagascar) both Ruben and Mia will now better understand future references made about New York.
We made it to the National History museum. The size of this museum is incredible and we were torn with having to choose between the different exhibits. The kids had never been to a Planetarium before and here they learned about the birth of stars, what they are made of, and the origins of our solar system.
We all were particularly keen on the North American animal and ocean exhibit.
Ruben was interested in the origins of man displays, and Mia looked as pretty as a pearl sitting in the giant clam shell.
The MOMA was a wonderful place to see many of the original paintings the kids have started to become familiar with. Mia enjoyed seeing Van Gogh’s Starry Night and the huge Monet Murals. Ruben was more taken with the modern cubism and he enjoyed snapping many photos which we share here.
The kids were thrilled to see the sculpture of Perseus at the MET. The MET was more amazing then we could have could imagined. Mia would like to move to New York in order to visit the MET every day. The displays and galleries were beautiful. Ruben got to see first hand numerous Egyptian artifacts which is appropriate because of the book he is reading takes place in Egypt. He also would like to fashion his study (when he gets one) after the famous architect who’s famous craftsman style Ruben found relaxing (forgotten his name , possibly Wright?). Photo shown below.
Mia and I enjoyed the period rooms, especially the elaborately decorated French Palace rooms.
We were especially lucky in New York to see a number of fantastic musicians performing on the streets. The quality of the music was better then most would find paying for high priced tickets. A smaller but very fascinating museum was the Tenement museum where we took the “ Piecing It Together “ tour.
The grand finale of our trip to New York was being treated to dinner at Le Cirque by Grandpa John and Grandma Serena. The evening was terrific and made extra ordinary by a complimentary desert given to Mia which was an intricately made chocolate art sculpture. The whole evening was decadent and divine and will be a great memory for us all. We made our way to Brooklyn in the sunshine where the QM was waiting for us.
